Savannah's Historic District is the reason most travelers fall in love with this city. Spanning 2.5 square miles of oak-lined squares, cobblestone streets, and homes that date back centuries, it's the most walkable and most photographed part of Savannah, and it's where the majority of our vacation rentals are located. If you're planning a trip and want to be steps from Forsyth Park, River Street, and the squares along Jones Street and Oglethorpe Avenue, here's our local guide to staying in the heart of it all.

Why the Historic District Is the Best Base for Your Trip

Almost everything worth seeing in Savannah is within walking distance once you're staying in the Historic District. From a rental near Jones Street or Crawford Square, you can reach Forsyth Park in minutes, wander through dozens of squares lined with live oaks and Spanish moss, and end up on River Street for dinner without ever needing a car. Many of our properties, from carriage houses tucked behind Jones Street to condos near Oglethorpe Avenue and Gwinnett Street, put you right in this walkable core.

Forsyth Park and the Southern End of the District

Forsyth Park anchors the southern edge of the Historic District, with its iconic white fountain and wide, shaded lawns. It's a favorite spot for morning walks, picnics, and the occasional outdoor festival or farmers market. Properties near Jones Street and the surrounding squares are typically just a short walk from the park, making it easy to start the day with a coffee and a stroll before the city gets busy.

Jones Street and the Heart of the District

Often called one of the most beautiful streets in America, Jones Street is lined with restored townhomes, carriage houses, and some of Savannah's most charming residential architecture. Several of our rentals sit on or near Jones Street, offering guests a chance to actually live on this iconic street rather than just walk past it. From here, it's a short walk to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, known for its towering spires and stained glass, and to the boutiques and cafes scattered throughout the surrounding squares.

River Street and Downtown Dining

A walk toward the river brings you to River Street, with its cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and a steady stream of restaurants and shops. For a classic Savannah dinner, The Olde Pink House remains a favorite, serving southern dishes like shrimp and grits inside an 18th-century mansion just a few blocks from the riverfront. Staying in the Historic District means River Street is an easy evening walk, no driving or parking required.

Ghost Tours and Savannah After Dark

Savannah's reputation as one of America's most haunted cities comes alive after sunset. Ghost tours wind through the squares and alleys of the Historic District, often passing directly by some of the homes our guests stay in. If you're curious about the spookier side of Savannah's history, an evening tour is an easy add-on when you're already staying in the district.

A Short Trip to Tybee Island

When it's time for a beach day, Tybee Island is about 20 minutes from the Historic District by car. It's an easy day trip from any of our downtown rentals, letting you split your stay between historic streets and sandy beaches without changing where you're staying.
